Trauma can make you feel isolated and alone. Whether it's from a distinct situation you remember or a build up of events over time, it can often leave you feeling on edge, disconnected, lost, and not like yourself.
Trauma can impact your daily life. It influences how your body reacts, how you see yourself, form relationships, and view the world. It can feel exhausting trying to "push through" it all.
Maybe you’ve told yourself that what happened “wasn’t that bad,” or that others had it worse. Maybe you’ve been the strong one for so long that you’ve never had space to ask what you needed. Trauma isn’t only about one big event. It can also come from growing up in a chaotic or unpredictable home, caring for others before you were ready, experiencing racism or discrimination, or carrying pain that was passed down through your family. Your experience counts, however it looks.
Through trauma therapy, Water Lily Counseling can help you feel connected to yourself again. Let's work together to help you feel grounded in your body and release shame and guilt.
The events can't seem to escape you, showing up in distressing dreams, intrusive unwanted thoughts, memories of the events, or even feeling like you are stuck reliving the event.
You find yourself pulling away from loved ones or avoiding anything that reminds you of the event. You can feel numb, disconnected, and not present or like yourself.
Avoiding can feel like the only way to cope, and it makes sense that you protected yourself this way.
You're more jumpy than usual, feeling like something is around the corner or the other show is going to drop at any time. Maybe you're irritable or lashing out at others. It's hard to stay concentrated and you find yourself easily distracted.
Things that you usually love don't bring you joy anymore, or you can't be bothered to get yourself to do them. You're feeling numb, blaming yourself, or feeling consumed by shame and guilt.
You can feel alone even in a crowded room. You're having a hard time being vulnerable with others, you don't know who you can trust anymore. You may keep people at arm’s length, or find yourself in relationships where you give too much and receive too little.
Things in your body just don't feel right. Whether it's being tense all the time, feeling exhausted, or like you've just run a marathon.

Your reactions make sense. Trauma responses are not signs of weakness or that something is “wrong” with you. They are your mind and body’s attempt to keep you safe. Hypervigilance, numbness, shutting down, people pleasing, and pulling away often develop because, at some point, they were needed.
For many BIPOC adults, trauma is also shaped by cultural and community contexts: the expectation to stay strong, the stigma around mental health, and the message that “we don’t talk about that.” You may have learned to minimize your pain to protect your family or fit in. In therapy, you don’t have to do that. Your culture, background, and values are welcomed here, not treated as something to explain or justify away the situations you have been through.
If you find that any of this resonates, Water Lily Counseling can help. In our work, you will be able to:
