Anxiety & Trauma therapy for BIPOC adults in Arlington, VA

Serving Arlington & Northern Virginia — Alexandria, Falls Church, McLean, Ashburn and beyond.

You've been carrying this long enough.

Trauma doesn't always show up as one clear moment you can point to. Sometimes it's a build-up; years of bracing for impact, staying "on," or holding it together for everyone around you. Over time, that takes a toll. You might feel disconnected from your own body, unsure of who you are outside of the roles you play, or exhausted from constantly managing everything on your own.

Anxiety can look like the pressure to get everything done perfectly. The endless things on your to-do list swirling around in your mind non-stop. Carrying the load for everyone and wondering how you will keep this cycle going. It can look like frustration, tiredness, not knowing how to rest, and your brain not shutting off, no matter how hard you try.

Anxiety and trauma therapy can help you come back to yourself. Water Lily Counseling wants to work together to help you feel present, grounded, and free of the pressure or shame that's been weighing you down.

Does Any of This Sound Familiar?

You may be struggling with:

  • Past events replaying in your mind, or showing up uninvited in dreams or flashbacks.
  • Pulling back from people you love, or feeling numb more often than not.
  • Always feeling a little on edge, like you're waiting for something to go wrong.
  • Losing interest in things that used to bring you joy.
  • Not trusting people, even ones who've never given you a reason not to.
  • Your body feeling tense, wired, or worn out, even when nothing "happened" today.

You might also notice that:

  • You can’t switch off after work, even on weekends or vacations.
  • You say yes to everything, then feel resentful and depleted.
  • You feel like you have to be the “strong one” for your family, friends, or team.
  • You feel caught between two cultures, or between who you are and who you’re expected to be.
  • Rest feels uncomfortable, undeserved, or unsafe.

You don't have to keep white-knuckling your way through this.

Your Story is Welcome Here!

Shed the cultural shame and stigma that may be lingering around mental health.

Many BIPOC adults grow up hearing messages like “what will people say?” or “we don’t talk about that" and learn to keep everything quiet; that feelings are a taboo topic. Mental health can carry stigma in families and communities, and asking for help may feel like a betrayal, or like proof that you’re not grateful enough. You may have learned to minimize your pain, keep the peace, and handle everything quietly.

Anxiety and trauma can also be shaped by things bigger than any one person: immigration and the grief of leaving home, racism and discrimination, financial pressure, or pain passed down through generations. Your reactions make sense. Many of the patterns that exhaust you today started as ways of staying safe.

In therapy, you don’t have to explain your culture, your family, or why things are complicated. Your background and values are respected here, not treated as the problem.

Take the steps towards healing.

What working together can look like...

Anxiety or trauma therapy isn't about reliving your worst moments on repeat. It's about building the tools and safety to actually process them. Together, we'll work toward:

  • Understanding how anxiety or trauma lives in your thoughts, emotions, and body
  • Getting out of autopilot and into feeling more grounded and present
  • Regulating your nervous system instead of being run by it
  • Releasing the shame and self-blame that trauma often leaves behind
  • Reconnecting with joy in yourself and in your relationships

We’ll start by getting to know you and what you’d like to feel instead. You set the pace, and you never have to share more than you’re ready to. Sessions are collaborative and combine practical, evidence-based tools with space to explore what’s underneath.

South Asian Anxiety & Trauma Therapist for adults in NoVA

Sabiha Zaman LCSW, LICSW | Serving Arlington and Northern VA remotely

Hi, I'm Sabiha and I'm excited to work with you!

Living in Northern Virginia can make anxiety or trauma harder to notice-- as a NoVA native, I completely understand. The DC area runs on ambition and achievement. Demanding careers in government, consulting, tech, healthcare, and law. Long commutes. Grind culture where being busy is a badge of honor. As a first-generation South Asian, I also know what it's like to feel the pressure of your family’s sacrifices and expectations on top of your own. From the outside, you’re thriving. On the inside, you’re running on empty.

I work with adults throughout Northern Virginia ( Arlington, Alexandria, Falls Church, and beyond)  who are ready to stop just bearing with their anxiety, stress, or trauma and start healing from it.

My approach is collaborative and grounded in cultural humility. I don't believe in one-size-fits-all healing; we'll figure out together what actually helps you feel safe in your body and steady in your life again. I’m a licensed clinical social worker, and I’m passionate about creating a space where you don’t have to be the strong one. Sessions are virtual, so you can do this work from wherever feels safest to you.

You don't have to earn your way back to feeling like yourself. You're allowed to just start.

Ready to take that step?
