When did surviving become a full time job?

Maybe you've spent so long adapting, coping, and holding it together that you've lost touch with what you actually feel underneath it all. That's what anxiety and trauma do; they teach your nervous system to stay on guard long after the danger has passed, and it can leave you feeling wired, numb, or both at once.

Somerville is a city full of creative, driven, community-minded people, and it’s also an expensive, fast-paced place to build a life. Between rising rent, long work hours, grad school, side projects, and showing up for friends and family, it’s easy to keep going on autopilot. If you’re also the eldest daughter, the first in your family to build a career, or the child of immigrants, you may be carrying expectations that nobody around you sees. You may look like you have it together while feeling exhausted and alone.

Anxiety and trauma therapy aren't about erasing what happened. It's about helping your body and mind understand that you're safe now, so you can stop just surviving and start actually living.

You might recognize yourself here if...

  • Your mind keeps returning to things you wish you could just move past.
  • You've gotten really good at avoiding anything that stirs up old feelings.
  • You're quick to snap,  spiral, or just shut down.
  • Joy feels distant, like something that happens to other people.
  • You keep people at arm's length, even the ones who've earned your trust.
  • Your body holds tension you can't quite explain or release.
  • Sleep and rest can feel impossible.
  • You're managing a million things at once and that to-do list feels never ending.

You may also notice that:

  • You’re the one everyone leans on, but you don’t know who would be there for you.
  • You feel pressure to stay productive, even when you’re burned out.
  • You feel like you have to explain your culture or your family to the people around you.
  • You carry guilt about choosing a different path from the one your family expected.
  • You feel connected to your community and still lonely.

Surviving makes sense!

Many of the ways you cope today began as ways of staying safe. Staying alert, keeping the peace, achieving, caretaking, and staying quiet all make sense when you’ve lived in environments where you needed them. For many BIPOC adults, those environments include families shaped by migration and loss, communities where mental health isn’t openly discussed, and spaces where racism and microaggressions are a regular part of life.

You may have grown up hearing “what will people say?” or “we don’t talk about that.” So you learned to minimize your pain and handle things on your own.

None of this means something is wrong with you. It means you adapted.

And now you deserve support that helps you feel safe without having to do it all alone.

What healing can look like...

Working together, we'll focus on helping you:

  • Understand the connection between your anxiety, trauma history,  emotions, and body
  • Come back into the present moment instead of staying stuck in survival mode
  • Build real, practical tools for calming an overactive nervous system
  • Untangle yourself from shame and self-blame that were never fair to carry
  • Find your way back to joy, connection, and a sense of self

Healing doesn’t mean you’ll never feel anxious or that the past will disappear. Over time, many clients find that they:

  • Feel calmer and more at home in their bodies
  • Rest without guilt and enjoy the life they’re building
  • Say no and set boundaries with more confidence
  • Feel less weighed down by shame and self-blame
  • Feel safer connecting with others and trusting themselves

You don’t need the right words or a clear starting point. We’ll begin by getting to know you and what’s been weighing on you. You set the pace, and you never have to share more than you’re ready to. Early on, we’ll focus on building safety and stability, like learning ways to calm your body and ease overwhelming emotions. When you feel ready, we can gently explore the patterns underneath. Sessions are collaborative and combine practical, evidence-based tools with space for your story.
