Anxiety & Trauma Therapist in Richmond, VA

Meet Sabiha Zaman, LICSW, LCSW

I'm a first generation  Muslim, Bangladeshi-American woman. I know what it's like to grow in spaces that aren't familiar with mental health or know how to best respond to it. I can understand the pressures of wanting to please everyone and meet every goal, but struggling internally to figure out what you want for yourself.

I can understand the feeling of having to hide your true self to fit in, to put aside your own values for others, and to constantly problem solve for everyone else.

Because of this, I know that you are allowed to finally choose yourself and let your voice be the loudest.

I want to help my clients learn to overcome familial and cultural pressures, break free of unhelpful or unwanted intergenerational patterns, overcome anxiety, and find their own voices to navigate life to its fullest.

I'm Sabiha (she/they). I'm an anxiety and trauma therapist in Richmond, VA who wants to help you finally put yourself first, get unstuck, and heal from the pain.

I know what it's like...

The things we are taught growing up or see our loved ones go through can feel inevitable at times. It might be second nature to prioritize everyone else's needs that it even feels wrong to think about yourself. Walking on eggshells and making yourself small are now special skills. You know how to succeed and you do it well.

But at the end of the day, your body is exhausted. Your mind is tired of running a mile a minute. And your emotions need an outlet before they burst. You're finding yourself dreading family, work, or friend interactions. You want to stop having everything together for a change, but don't know if you are allowed to or how that will be perceived.

You CAN interrupt these inherited cycles and create new ones that work better for you. I invite you to finally give yourself the permission to rest, reset, and choose yourself.

You don't have to be ready to start therapy

Working with a new therapist can come with a lot of worries or hesitation: "can I trust this stranger? Will they be able to help me? How do I know they will truly understand me?"

I completely understand. I want to make sure you feel like you're able to be your authentic self in session and that we are building a genuine therapeutic relationship together. This means you'll be met with someone who shows up to each session with curiosity, compassion, and a true desire to meet you where you are at and walk along side you in your mental health journey.

Professional Experience

I'm dually licensed in Massachusetts and Virginia. I obtained my MSW from Boston University and my BA in Psychology and BA in Spanish from the University of Virginia. I have been practicing therapy since 2019 and have been in private practice since 2022.

More About Me

I'm a middle child, spouse, and parent to 2 cats, Lemon and Lychee (who may make an occasional appearance during session). In my free time, I love dabbling in DIYS and arts and crafts, trying new food, attending concerts, and watching movies. I bring my whole self to session in hopes that you feel comfortable to do the same.

I knew I wanted to be a therapist in middle school. I was the friend who gave advice and a listening ear willingly because I knew how challenging it could be to receive that, especially as a South Asian girl, when you really needed it. I love my work as a therapist and hope to work together soon!
