Couples Therapy for BIPOC adults in Richmond, VA

Virtual Services Available Throughout Virginia and Massachusetts

You love each other, and still something feels stuck. Maybe the same argument keeps coming back with different details. Maybe you’ve become more like roommates or co-managers of a household than partners. Maybe one of you shuts down while the other pushes harder to be heard, and neither of you knows how to break the cycle.

Water Lily Counseling invites you both to slow down and be curious about what’s happening between you, without blame or justification, to get back to being a team again.

Does Any of This Sound Familiar?

You may be struggling with:

  • Having the same fight again and again without feeling resolved
  • Feeling unheard, criticized, or like you’re walking on eggshells
  • One partner pulling away while the other pursues
  • Disconnection, less intimacy, or feeling more like teammates than partners
  • Trouble talking about money, in-laws, children, or the future
  • Recovering from broken trust or a painful rupture
  • Feeling pulled between your partner and your family’s expectations
  • Stress and anxiety spilling into the relationship

You don’t have to wait until things are “bad enough” to ask for support, and there is nothing "wrong" with you for seeking couples therapy.

Your Relationship Doesn’t Exist in a Vacuum.

Every relationship carries more than the two people in it.

You each bring your family’s way of handling conflict, love, and money, along with messages you absorbed growing up. Maybe you learned that anger meant danger, that needs were a burden, or that you should “just handle it" on your own. Maybe your family never talked about feelings at all.

For many BIPOC couples, there’s more layered on top:

  • Different cultural backgrounds. You and your partner may have grown up with different ideas about family roles, communication, respect, and what “support” looks like.
  • First-generation pressure. One or both of you may be carrying a family’s sacrifices and expectations, including financial responsibility for parents or relatives.
  • Family and community involvement. In-laws, extended family, faith communities, and cultural expectations about marriage and children can shape the relationship in ways that are hard to name.
  • Stress from outside the home. Racism, discrimination, and the pressure to perform at work can follow you into the relationship and show up as irritability, exhaustion, or distance.
  • Unspoken family patterns. Intergenerational trauma and “we don’t talk about that” can quietly shape how you each handle conflict and closeness.

None of this means something is wrong with you or with your partnership.

It means you’re two whole people with real histories, trying to build something together.

How We'll Work Together:

Couples therapy isn’t about deciding who’s right or taking sides.

It’s about helping you understand the patterns you fall into together and giving you new ways to respond.

In our work, you’ll have the space to:

  • Understand the cycles you get stuck in and what each of you is feeling during them
  • Learn tools to communicate clearly, listen better, and repair after conflict
  • Calm your nervous systems so hard conversations don’t turn into fights or shutting down
  • Set boundaries with family, work, and each other, without guilt
  • Explore how your families, cultures, and past experiences shape the way you love
  • Rebuild closeness, trust, and intimacy at a pace that feels right for you both

Our first sessions focus on getting to know you both: what brought you in, what’s working, and what you’d each like to feel differently. You may also have an individual session or two so each of you has space to share your story. You never have to share more than you’re ready to, and you won’t be pushed into conversations before you both feel prepared.

A Space for All Kinds of Relationships

Love is love.

Water Lily Counseling welcomes couples of all identities and relationship structures: married and unmarried, dating, engaged, long-term partners, same-gender and different-gender couples, intercultural and interfaith couples, and those in polyamorous or ethically non-monogamous relationships. You don’t have to explain your relationship to be understood here. Your values, culture, and choices are respected from the first conversation.
